You Don’t Lower the Standard — You Grow Into It
One thing I’ve learned over time is this:
You don’t lower the standard — you grow into it.
When you’re starting out, it’s easy to look at high standards and feel like you’re not ready for them.
Like you don’t have the time.
The experience.
The equipment.
The systems.
So what do most people do?
They lower the standard to match where they are.
“That’s good enough for now.”
“We’ll fix it later.”
“We’re not there yet.”
And I get it.
Because in the beginning, you’re figuring everything out.
You’re learning as you go.
You’re trying to survive while you build.
But the business teaches you something if you stay in it long enough.
Lowering the standard doesn’t help you grow.
It just delays it.
Because whatever standard you operate at…
becomes your normal.
And once something becomes normal, it’s harder to change.
That’s why I’ve learned to look at standards differently.
Not as something I already meet…
but something I’m working toward.
Something I grow into.
There were times where the level we wanted to operate at…
felt ahead of where we were.
Cleaner installs.
Better communication.
More organized processes.
More consistent results.
We weren’t always there yet.
But instead of lowering the standard…
we kept it in front of us.
We let it challenge us.
We let it expose where we needed to improve.
And step by step, we grew into it.
That’s the part people don’t always talk about.
Growth isn’t always about doing more.
Sometimes it’s about tightening things up.
Sharpening your process.
Getting more disciplined in the small things.
Because over time…
your capacity increases.
Your systems improve.
Your awareness sharpens.
And the things that once felt hard…
start to feel normal.
That’s when you realize something.
You didn’t lower the standard to get there.
You grew into it.
And the truth is…
you’re always going to be growing into the next level.
Because every time you level up…
the standard moves again.
Not because it changed…
but because now you can see more clearly what’s possible.

Standards aren’t there to discourage you.
They’re there to develop you.
