Burnout Doesn’t Come From Hard Work — It Comes From Misalignment
I used to think burnout came from working too much.
Long hours.
Late nights.
Busy weeks.
Just grinding non-stop.
But over time, I’ve realized something different.
It’s not the work that burns you out.
It’s the misalignment.
Because I’ve had seasons where I was working hard…
and still felt good.
Focused.
Clear.
Even energized.
And I’ve had other seasons where the workload wasn’t even that crazy…
but everything felt heavy.
Frustrating.
Draining.
That’s when I started paying attention.
Burnout doesn’t come from effort.
It comes from being out of alignment.
Out of alignment with your capacity.
Taking on more than you’re equipped to handle right now.
Out of alignment with your process.
Skipping steps.
Rushing jobs.
Trying to make things fit that don’t fit.
Out of alignment with expectations.
Saying yes to timelines you know are too tight.
Overpromising.
Underestimating what it actually takes to get something done right.
That’s where the weight builds up.
Not from the work itself…
but from the friction.
From constantly fighting against how things should be done.
I’ve felt that firsthand.
Jobs stacked too tight.
Deadlines that didn’t make sense.
Trying to push things through instead of spacing them out.
And it doesn’t just affect the work.
It affects how you show up.
Your patience.
Your focus.
Your decision making.
Everything gets heavier than it needs to be.
That’s why I’ve learned to look at burnout differently.
Not as a sign that I’m working too hard…
but as a signal.
Something is out of alignment.
Something needs to be adjusted.
Maybe it’s the schedule.
Maybe it’s the process.
Maybe it’s what we agreed to take on in the first place.
But something needs to move.
Because when things are aligned…
the work still requires effort.
It still takes discipline.
But it doesn’t drain you the same way.
It doesn’t feel like you’re constantly trying to catch up.
That’s something the business teaches you over time.
Burnout isn’t always about doing too much.
Sometimes… it’s about doing things in a way that doesn’t work.
And once you see that…
you start making better decisions.
Not just based on what you can do…
but based on what actually makes sense.
