The Standards You Think You Have vs The Ones You Actually Live By

📅 Apr 20 ⏱️ 5 min read 🏈 Week 17 • Day 1

I’ve learned something over time…

There’s a difference between the standards you think you have…

and the ones you actually live by.

Early on, it’s easy to say you have high standards.

You care about quality.
You care about doing things right.
You care about your reputation.

And all of that is true.

Until it gets tested.

Because business has a way of exposing the truth.

Not when things are going smooth…

but when things get uncomfortable.

When you’re behind.
When something goes wrong.
When you’re tired.
When you’re trying to figure things out on the fly.

That’s when your real standards show up.

Not the ones you talk about.

The ones you live by.

I’ve had moments where I thought my standards were solid…

until I found myself in a situation where I had to make a decision.

Cut a corner…
or take the extra time.

Rush it…
or do it right.

Say yes…
or push something back.

And in those moments—

you find out real quick what your standards actually are.

Because pressure doesn’t create your standards.

It reveals them.

That’s something I’ve had to learn.

And I’m still learning.

Because the goal isn’t to pretend you have perfect standards.

The goal is to become aware of where they actually are.

To notice the gaps.
To recognize the moments where you fall short.

Not to beat yourself up—

but to understand what needs to change.

Because once you see it…

you can’t unsee it.

And that’s where growth starts.

Not in what you say you believe in…

but in what you’re willing to do consistently.

That’s the difference.
