The Standard You Walk Past Is the Standard You Accept

📅 Mar 31 ⏱️ 5 min read 🏈 Week 14 • Day 2

One of the harder lessons I’ve had to learn in business is this:

What you walk past… you accept.

Not because you agree with it.
Not because you want it to be that way.
But because you allowed it to continue.

And in business, what gets allowed…

becomes the standard.

That shows up in a lot of ways.

A small mistake that doesn’t get corrected.
A detail that gets overlooked.
A shortcut that gets taken.
A process that gets skipped “just this once.”

At first, it doesn’t seem like a big deal.

It feels small.
Temporary.
Something you can fix later.

But over time, those things stack up.

And what used to stand out…

starts to feel normal.

That’s when you realize something.

Standards aren’t just about what you expect.

They’re about what you enforce.

What you correct.
What you address when it happens.

Because if you walk past it once…

it becomes easier to walk past it again.

And before long, it’s not the exception anymore.

It’s the way things are done.

I’ve had to catch myself in that more than once.

Seeing something I knew wasn’t right…
and letting it go because I was busy.
Or because I didn’t want to deal with it in the moment.
Or because it felt small compared to everything else going on.

But the business has a way of showing you the truth.

What you tolerate will grow.

And what you correct will improve.

That doesn’t mean you have to be perfect.
And it doesn’t mean you overreact to everything.

But it does mean you pay attention.

And when something doesn’t meet the standard you’re trying to build…

you address it.

You fix it.
You tighten it up.

Because standards aren’t built in big moments.

They’re built in the small ones.

In the things you choose not to ignore.
In the details you decide still matter.
In the moments where it would be easier to let it slide…

but you don’t.

That’s something the business teaches you over time.

Not just what a standard is…

but how it’s maintained.
