The Business Teaches You to Raise Your Standards

📅 Mar 30 ⏱️ 5 min read 🏈 Week 14 • Day 1

One thing I’ve learned about standards is this.

You don’t start with them fully figured out.

At least I didn’t.

In the beginning, I was just trying to make things work.
Get the job done.
Figure things out as I went.
Do whatever it took to keep moving forward.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

That’s part of the process.

But over time, the business starts to show you something.

Where your current standards aren’t enough.

Not in a negative way.
Just in an honest way.

You start to see it in the results.
In the mistakes.
In the rework.
In the stress that could have been avoided.
In the situations where something could have been handled better.

And that’s when you realize something.

It’s not always the situation that needs to change.

Sometimes it’s your standards.

Not standards you pretend to have.
Not standards you talk about.
But the ones you actually live by.

The ones that show up in your process.
In your preparation.
In your attention to detail.
In how you communicate.
In how you follow through.

I’ve had to come to terms with that more than once.

Realizing that if I want a better outcome…

something in me has to improve.

Something in how I operate has to be raised.

And that’s not always comfortable.

Because it means taking ownership.
It means looking at things honestly.
It means admitting that what got you here…

might not be enough to take you where you want to go.

But that’s also where growth happens.

Not by trying to be perfect.
And not by pretending you already have it all figured out.

But by recognizing where you need to improve…

and actually doing something about it.

That’s how standards are built.

Not all at once.
But over time.
Through experience.
Through correction.
Through learning what works and what doesn’t.

And choosing to operate at a higher level the next time.

That’s what the business teaches you.

Not just how to do the work…

but how to raise the level of how you do it.
