The Art of Being Confident

📅 June 23 ⏱️ 5 min read 🌱 What Healthy Actually Looks Like

When I started this business, I had confidence.

What I did not have was experience.

That is an important distinction.

I did not come into this industry knowing everything I needed to know.

I did not have years of print shop experience behind me.

I did not fully understand all the details of owning and operating this type of business.

But somehow, I still thought I was going to hit the ground running.

Then reality introduced itself.

Equipment had to be learned.

Processes had to be built.

Customers had expectations.

Deadlines mattered.

Mistakes cost money.

Cash flow mattered.

Leadership mattered.

And I had to learn pretty quickly that confidence by itself was not enough.

The marketplace has a way of introducing you to your blind spots.

I think people sometimes confuse confidence with arrogance.

But they are not the same thing.

Confidence says, "I can figure this out."

Arrogance says, "I already know everything."

Those are two very different attitudes.

Arrogance resists correction.

Confidence learns from it.

Looking back, I can see that some of my early confidence was probably a little too high for what I actually knew at the time.

But I also think that confidence helped me start.

Sometimes you need enough belief to begin before you have enough experience to fully understand what beginning will require.

That is part of entrepreneurship.

If most of us waited until we knew everything, we probably never would have started.

But starting is only the beginning.

After that, confidence has to mature.

It has to become teachable.

It has to become honest.

It has to become willing to admit what it does not know.

Healthy confidence is not pretending you have all the answers.

It is believing you can learn what you do not know.

The longer we build this business, the more I realize that the reason Red Alpha is still here is not because I was always right.

It is because we kept learning.

We learned from mistakes.

We learned from customers.

We learned from bad decisions.

We learned from equipment problems.

We learned from seasons that stretched us.

We learned from the things that did not go the way we expected.

And every lesson shaped the confidence we have now.

That is why confidence with a track record feels different than confidence without one.

One is based on assumption.

The other is based on evidence.

Evidence that you have figured things out before.

Evidence that you have survived mistakes.

Evidence that you have adapted.

Evidence that you are still learning.

Confidence got me started.

Humility kept me growing.

And I think that is part of the art of being confident.

It is not walking into every room acting like you know everything.

It is walking into the next season believing you can learn what the season requires.

What Healthy Actually Looks Like

Healthy confidence is not arrogance. It is not pretending to know everything. It is the willingness to start, the humility to learn, and the track record that comes from continuing to grow.

Because confidence may get you started, but humility is what keeps you growing.
