Standards Cost You Something — That’s What Makes Them Real
There’s something I’ve learned about standards this week.
They sound good when you talk about them.
They feel right when things are going smooth.
But you don’t really know what your standards are…
until they cost you something.
Because at some point, doing things the right way will cost you.
It might cost you time.
When you slow down to get it right instead of rushing to get it done.
It might cost you money.
When you fix something instead of letting it slide.
It might cost you comfort.
When you have to have a hard conversation instead of avoiding it.
It might even cost you opportunity.
When you say no to something that doesn’t meet your standard.
That’s when it becomes real.
Because now it’s not just something you believe.
It’s something you’re choosing.
I’ve had moments where doing things the right way…
would have been harder in the moment.
Slower.
More inconvenient.
But I’ve also learned something over time.
Cutting corners might save you today…
but it usually costs you more later.
In rework.
In stress.
In reputation.
And sometimes in relationships.
Standards aren’t just about doing things right.
They’re about deciding what kind of business you’re building.
And what you’re willing to carry to build it that way.
That’s why they cost something.
Because anything that actually matters…
usually does.
And maybe that’s what makes them valuable.
Because if it didn’t cost anything…
it wouldn’t require anything from you.
But when it does cost you…
and you still choose to hold the line…
that’s when it becomes part of who you are.
Not just in business…
but in life.
And today being Good Friday…
that idea hits a little different.
The idea that doing the right thing…
isn’t always the easy thing.
But it’s still the right thing.
That’s something the business teaches you.
And if you let it…
it’s something life reinforces too.
