Recognizing Voices and Knowing Which Ones Should Carry More Weight

📅 August 5, 2026 ⏱️ 5 min read 🤝 Healthy Relationships

One thing I've learned the hard way...

Recognizing people's voices and knowing which ones should carry more weight are two very different things.

I believe everyone deserves to be heard.

Every person has a story worth hearing.

Every personality has something worth teaching.

But that doesn't mean every opinion should determine the direction of my life.

In The Seven Frequencies, Erwin McManus explores the idea that every personality brings unique strengths and unique challenges.

That idea has stayed with me because the longer I lead a business, build relationships, and have conversations with people...

The more I realize that every voice has something to contribute.

The challenge isn't hearing people.

The challenge is discerning which voices should shape us.

Healthy people learn to recognize the voices around them.

Some voices encourage us.

Some voices challenge us.

Some voices remind us that there are perspectives other than our own.

Some voices simply help us see a blind spot we couldn't see by ourselves.

All of those voices have value.

But they don't all carry the same responsibility.

I've noticed something over the years.

The people who know me best usually ask the hardest questions.

Not because they're against me.

Because they're invested in who I'm becoming.

Meanwhile...

Some opinions come from people who don't know my story.

They don't know my calling.

They don't know the responsibility I'm carrying.

Those opinions may still contain wisdom.

But they shouldn't automatically determine the direction of my life.

Wisdom isn't refusing to listen.

Wisdom is learning which voices should carry more weight.

The more I think about it...

The more I realize that healthy relationships aren't just about surrounding ourselves with good people.

They're about understanding the role each person is meant to play in our lives.

Every person has value.

Every relationship has purpose.

But not every relationship was designed to have the same level of influence.

Tomorrow I'd like to share a simple framework that has helped me understand why some relationships naturally carry more weight than others.

I hope you'll join me for the conversation.

What Healthy Actually Looks Like

Healthy people don't silence other voices, nor do they allow every opinion to define them. They learn to listen with humility while exercising wisdom about which voices shape their character, decisions, and direction.

Every voice deserves respect. But not every voice should carry the same weight. Learning that difference may be one of the healthiest decisions you'll ever make.
