Protecting Your Energy Isn't Selfish

📅 June 16 ⏱️ 5 min read 🌱 What Healthy Actually Looks Like

For a long time, I thought protecting my energy was selfish.

If someone needed help, I wanted to help.

If an opportunity appeared, I wanted to pursue it.

If there was a problem, I felt responsible for solving it.

The problem was that eventually everything started feeling like my responsibility.

And when that happens, it's easy to convince yourself that being exhausted is just part of leadership.

Part of ownership.

Part of caring.

Part of building something meaningful.

We're still learning this ourselves.

Because the truth is, there will always be more opportunities.

More projects.

More requests.

More problems to solve.

There will always be something asking for your attention.

What I've had to learn is that attention and energy are not unlimited resources.

And just because something wants access to them doesn't mean it deserves access to them.

That can be difficult for people who genuinely care.

Especially business owners.

Especially leaders.

Especially parents.

Especially people who have spent most of their lives showing up for others.

Sometimes the people who care the most are the ones most likely to burn themselves out.

I don't think healthy leadership means giving everyone everything they want.

I think healthy leadership means being a good steward of what you've been given.

Your time.

Your energy.

Your relationships.

Your health.

Your calling.

Because if you neglect those things long enough, eventually there's less of you available for the people who matter most.

I've noticed that when my energy gets depleted, everything gets harder.

My patience gets shorter.

My decision making gets worse.

My stress gets louder.

Nothing becomes impossible.

But everything becomes heavier.

That's one reason I don't think protecting your energy is selfish anymore.

I think it's responsible.

My wife deserves the best version of me I can give her.

My kids deserve that.

My grandkids deserve that.

My team deserves that.

The vision we're building deserves that.

And the truth is, I can't consistently give people my best if I'm constantly operating at my worst.

Healthy people don't protect their energy because they care less.

They protect their energy because they want to keep caring for a long time.

The longer we build this business, the more I realize that protecting your energy isn't selfish.

Sometimes it's one of the most responsible things you can do.

What Healthy Actually Looks Like

Healthy growth isn't just about doing more. Sometimes it's about learning what deserves your attention, your energy, and your responsibility—and what doesn't.

Because protecting your energy isn't about caring less. It's about making sure you can continue showing up for the people and purposes that matter most.
