BEHIND THE X’s & O’s OF BUSINESS

Ownership Means It’s Your Fault

There’s a sentence that changed the way I lead.

“You know, as the owner… eventually it becomes your fault.”

A customer said that to me years ago.

And they were right.

It didn’t matter that an order wasn’t placed on time.
It didn’t matter that someone else dropped the ball.
It didn’t matter that I had legitimate reasons for why we were behind.

As the owner, it was my responsibility.

Ownership doesn’t mean you caused every mistake.

It means you’re responsible for the outcome.

There’s a difference.

Blame looks backward.

Ownership looks forward.

Blame asks, “Who messed this up?”

Ownership asks, “How do I make sure this doesn’t happen again?”

That mindset shift is uncomfortable.

Because it removes excuses.

You can’t hide behind a vendor.
You can’t hide behind an employee.
You can’t hide behind circumstances.

If it happened under your leadership, it’s yours to fix.

Early on, I used to separate myself from problems.

“That wasn’t my fault.”
“That was miscommunication.”
“That was someone else’s oversight.”

But that thinking keeps you small.

The moment I began accepting full responsibility — even for things I didn’t directly cause — everything changed.

Systems improved.
Communication improved.
Expectations became clearer.
Partnerships became stronger.

Not because problems disappeared.

But because I stopped outsourcing accountability.

Ownership forces growth.

When something breaks, you ask:

What did I miss?
Where was I unclear?
What assumption did I make?
What system needs tightening?

That’s not self-condemnation.

That’s leadership maturity.

Because once you accept that it’s your responsibility, you gain power.

You can’t control everything.

But you can control how you respond.
You can control the standards.
You can control the structure.

Ownership means you stop defending your ego.

And start defending your standards.

The business reflects the owner.

And mature owners don’t look for someone to blame.

They look for something to build.
