Lowering the Standard Without Realizing It

📅 Apr 22 ⏱️ 5 min read 🏈 Week 17 • Day 3

Most people don’t wake up one day and decide—

“I’m going to lower my standards.”

That’s not how it happens.

It’s more subtle than that.

It happens in small moments.
Quiet decisions.
The ones that feel harmless at the time.

You’re a little behind… so you rush something.
You’re tired… so you let something slide.
You’re trying to keep things moving… so you make an exception.

And in the moment—

it doesn’t feel like a big deal.

It feels justified.
It feels necessary.
It feels like you’re just doing what you have to do.

That’s how it starts.

Not with a big decision…

but with a small compromise.

And then another.
And then another.

Until eventually—

what used to feel like a compromise… starts to feel normal.

That’s the part that’s dangerous.

Because once something becomes normal…

you stop questioning it.

you stop noticing it.

And now your standard has changed—

without you ever deciding to change it.

I’ve had moments like that.

Where I look back and realize—

I let something slide that I wouldn’t have accepted before.

Not because I didn’t care…

but because I got used to it.

That’s how standards drift.

Not all at once.
But over time.

Through repetition.
Through justification.
Through convenience.

And the truth is—

it’s easy to convince yourself it’s temporary.

“It’s just this one job.”
“It’s just this one time.”
“I’ll fix it later.”

But if you’re not careful…

those “just this once” moments start stacking up.

And now you’re operating at a level…

that you didn’t intend to be at.

That’s why awareness matters.

Because the goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is catching it early.

Recognizing when something feels off.
When something doesn’t line up with how you want to operate.

And making the adjustment…

before it becomes your new normal.

Because the longer you let it slide…

the harder it is to correct.

Not because you can’t fix it…

but because now it’s part of your routine.

That’s why standards require attention.

Not just when things go wrong…

but in the small, everyday decisions.

The ones that don’t feel important at the time.

Because those are the ones…

that shape everything.
