Learning to See the Treasure in People

📅 July 28 ⏱️ 5 min read 🤝 Healthy Relationships

We all know people who are easy to like.

They're encouraging.

Positive.

Dependable.

They make every room feel a little lighter.

Then there are the people who challenge us.

The ones who talk too much.

The ones who seem negative.

The ones who are impatient.

The ones who always have an opinion.

It's easy to decide who someone is based on the part of their personality that frustrates us.

But what if we're only looking at the surface?

What if there is something valuable buried beneath the part we don't understand?

In Matthew 13:44, Jesus describes a man who discovers treasure hidden in a field.

To everyone else, it may have looked like ordinary dirt.

But that man recognized something valuable beneath the surface.

He saw what others had overlooked.

That passage makes me think about the people in our communities.

Every person carries a different personality.

A different perspective.

A different way of communicating.

A different way of contributing.

The quiet person may notice details everyone else misses.

The outgoing person may start the conversation that creates a new opportunity.

The skeptic may ask the difficult question that keeps us from making an expensive mistake.

The dreamer may see a possibility long before anyone else believes it can happen.

The strong personality may be the person willing to stand firm when everyone else wants to back down.

None of those personalities are perfect.

Neither is mine.

If I only focus on what is difficult about people, I may miss the gift they bring into the room.

That doesn't mean we ignore unhealthy behavior.

It doesn't mean we excuse disrespect, dishonesty or harm.

Seeing the good in someone doesn't require us to pretend the bad isn't there.

It means we refuse to reduce an entire person to their most frustrating quality.

Healthy communities aren't built by perfect people.

They're built by people who learn how to recognize value in one another.

People who become curious instead of immediately becoming critical.

People who ask...

What does this person bring that I may not be able to bring?

What have they lived through that shaped the way they respond?

What treasure might be hidden beneath my first impression?

Every person has a story worth hearing.

And sometimes the treasure isn't hidden because the person has nothing to offer.

Sometimes it's hidden because we haven't taken the time to look beyond the surface.

What Healthy Actually Looks Like

Healthy people don't ignore harmful behavior, but they also don't define someone by a single flaw. They learn to see people honestly while remaining open to the value, perspective and potential each person carries.

Before you dismiss someone because their personality is different from yours, slow down and look again. There may be treasure beneath the surface that your first impression wasn't patient enough to discover.
