Healthy Progress Happens Underground First
Yesterday we talked about learning how to bloom where you’re planted.
The part we don’t talk about enough is that blooming usually isn’t the first sign of growth.
Roots are.
And roots don’t usually look impressive while they’re growing.
They grow quietly.
Underground.
Out of sight.
Without applause.
But they are what make the bloom possible later.
I think business works the same way.
People often notice the visible parts:
The finished project.
The public announcement.
The launch.
The growth.
The opportunity.
But before any of that becomes visible, something usually had to grow underneath first.
Systems improve before results improve.
Habits improve before performance improves.
Communication improves before trust improves.
Character develops before confidence develops.
Everybody wants the bloom. Very few people get excited about growing roots.
And honestly, I understand why.
Growing roots can feel slow.
It can feel repetitive.
It can feel like nothing is happening.
You keep tightening the same process.
Having the same conversations.
Revisiting the same systems.
Learning the same lessons at deeper levels.
From the outside, it may not look like progress.
But underneath, capacity is being built.
That’s what roots do.
They create strength before visibility.
They create stability before expansion.
They create support before growth gets heavy.
And the longer we build this business, the more I realize how important that is.
Because growth without roots can become fragile.
Opportunity without structure can become overwhelming.
Expansion without stability can create pressure the business is not ready to carry.
That’s why healthy progress often happens underground first.
In the systems nobody sees.
In the habits nobody claps for.
In the conversations that make things clearer.
In the small improvements that don’t feel exciting in the moment.
Just because nobody can see the growth yet doesn’t mean growth isn’t happening.
Sometimes the most important progress is happening where nobody is looking.
The longer we build this business, the more I realize healthy growth often happens in seasons where it feels like nothing is changing.
But roots are growing.
Systems are improving.
Lessons are being learned.
Capacity is being built.
And eventually what was happening underground becomes visible above the surface.
Healthy progress happens underground first.
The bloom is just the part everybody notices.

What Healthy Actually Looks Like
This phase of Behind the X’s & O’s is about exploring what healthy growth, healthy leadership, healthy communication, and healthy business-building actually look like in real life.
Because healthy growth doesn’t always look visible right away. Sometimes the most important progress is happening underground first.
