Building Business, Marriage & Legacy with Steven & Samantha Bueno

KINGDOM KUTZ • STUDIO 58:11 • FAMILY • FAITH • ENTREPRENEURSHIP

There is the version of entrepreneurship we put on social media.

The grand opening. The new location. The full schedule. The finished sign. The packed chairs.

Then there is everything behind it.

The late nights. The conversations about inventory on the drive home. The spouse who needs your time when the business needs it too. The children waiting at home. The uncertainty of taking another leap when the numbers don't necessarily say you're ready.

Those are the stories we created Behind the X's & O's to tell.

Building Business, Marriage & Faith

Steven and Samantha sit down with Red Alpha Studios to talk Kingdom Kutz, Studio 58:11, marriage, family, entrepreneurship, sacrifice, and the faith underneath everything they're building.

More Than One Business

Steven and Samantha aren't building a single company.

Samantha is the owner of Studio 58:11 Salon & Suites. She has worked professionally in hair for seven years and told us her biggest regret may simply be that she didn't start sooner.

After outgrowing the smaller studio she and Steven once shared, Samantha moved Studio 58:11 into a larger location on July 1. The new space includes five suites and three stations—and according to Samantha, they're already full.

She's also working toward launching Moray Hair Co., a hair-extension line representing another step in her entrepreneurial journey.

Steven, meanwhile, is co-owner of Kingdom Kutz and Kingdom Supplies alongside his brother.

“How do you carry all of that without losing what you're actually building it for?”

“Where God Guides, He Provides”

To understand the Bueno family's businesses, you first have to understand Isaiah 58:11.

Before Steven and Samantha were married, Steven was living and working in Houston. Samantha wanted him home, but returning meant stepping away from some of the security he had there.

During that season, Samantha found a piece of home décor connected to Isaiah 58:11.

ISAIAH 58:11

“Where God guides,
He provides.”

She bought it and sent it to Steven as a reminder that if God guided him home, they could trust Him to provide there too.

Steven eventually returned.

Later, on Samantha's one-year anniversary at the church that had played an important role in strengthening her relationship with Christ, Steven proposed. During that same Sunday service, Isaiah 58:11 surfaced again.

For Samantha, it felt like confirmation of a promise they had already been carrying.

That scripture continued following their family. They even named their son Isaiah.

Years later, when Samantha opened her salon, that promise became part of its identity: Studio 58:11.

The Part Social Media Doesn't Show

Success doesn't eliminate tension. Sometimes it creates more things competing for the same 24 hours.

For Samantha, one of the hardest parts has been time.

Her love language is quality time, while Steven is highly ambitious and constantly thinking about what comes next. Business requires him to be an owner, barber, manager and problem solver. Then he still has to come home and be a husband and father.

Samantha faces that same transition herself: working through a full day of clients and then going home to be a mother while inventory, finances and business decisions may still be waiting.

Sometimes the challenge is knowing when to “cut this off to pick this up.”

Building a business requires sacrifice.

Building a family requires presence.

And sometimes both demand you at exactly the same time.

“We've Got a Lifetime to Go”

Steven returned repeatedly to another idea during our conversation: they've got a lifetime to go.

For him, marriage isn't something that exists around entrepreneurship. It's something he has to continue investing in while entrepreneurship happens.

He talked about learning to be Samantha's best friend, being gentle with his wife, understanding his children and continually choosing Christ first.

Samantha described the other side of that experience.

At the salon, Steven isn't merely her husband. Sometimes he's the business manager, maintenance guy, plumber, custodian—or whatever else that particular day requires.

Those aren't necessarily Instagram moments.

But they're often the moments a life together is actually made from.

Building During the Sowing Season

One theme kept resurfacing throughout the conversation: seasons.

Steven described their current season as one of sowing.

There are late nights now because they're building toward something. There are sacrifices now because they hope those sacrifices eventually create greater freedom and time with the people they love.

That doesn't make the sacrifice painless.

It gives the sacrifice context.

There is a difference between being endlessly busy and intentionally building.

The challenge is remembering what you're building toward—and refusing to sacrifice the very people you say you're building it for.

For Steven and Samantha, faith provides the anchor for making that distinction.

A Business Can Be Bigger Than a Business

Samantha talked about looking back at all the different hands that have touched their businesses—the people who helped, encouraged, swept a floor, provided a service or simply stepped in and said they wanted to bless what Steven and Samantha were building.

Those seemingly small contributions became seeds planted into something much bigger than “just a barber shop or just a hair salon.”

Businesses don't grow in isolation.

Behind almost every sign hanging over a successful business is an invisible network of spouses, customers, friends, mentors, employees, vendors, family members and people who showed up at precisely the right moment.

That's part of what Behind the X's & O's is about.

We want to show you the business.

But we also want to introduce you to the people, decisions, sacrifices, relationships and beliefs underneath it.

Because that's usually where the real story is.
